Tata is a small town of 25,000 people on the Vienna-Budapest motorway.
According to archaeological data, the area of today's town and its surroundings were inhabited before the Stone Age, in prehistoric times. Thanks to the forests rich in game and the hot springs, people have lived here practically continuously since then. Later, the inhabitants of Brigetio (Oszőny), considered one of the most important camps of the Roman Empire, brought water from the Tata springs to their homes.
The Tata Castle is today a prominent monument, built on a rocky hill surrounded by marshes and water between 1397-1409. It enjoyed its heyday as a royal holiday palace during the reign of King Sigismund of Luxembourg and King Matthias, but later monarchs also enjoyed staying here.
